The North Transept Rose Window, Chartres Cathedral

There is a c1976 coffee table book by Lawrence Lee et al called "Stained Glass" which is a real tour de force of the history and mechanics of stained glass.  As well as great photos by Sonia Halliday and Laura Lushingham, it contains keys to all the windows in Chartres and York.  It's out of print, but can still be found second hand sometimes.

Four of the best produced and most interesting large books on medieval architecture in the Dom Paradox library

Architecture of the Middle AAges, Urrike Laule

Cloisters of Europe, Daniel Faure & Veronique Roucnon

Ulrike Laule et al's Architecture of the Middle Ages mainly concentrates brilliantly on abbeys and churches, but includes some secular architecture.  Though not as comprehensive as the two Schütz books below, it's our favourite of the four books here.

At last search, this beautiful book was only available second hand, but it is well worth the effort to find.

Great Cathedrals, Bernhard Schutz

Great Monasteries of Europe, Schutz

"Great Cathedrals"  by Schütz has seriously good photographic coverage of the main cathedrals of England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy (ex Puglia, which you have to come to this site for), and a lot of it.

Schütz's even fatter fat and equally well photographed "Great Monasteries of Europe" does for monasteries what his book on the left did for cathedrals.

Gothic Sculpture 1140 - 1300, Paul Williamson, Yale

On the right is the amazingly modern looking Margravine Uta, wife of Margrave Ekkehard II, statued in Naumburg Cathedral (Eastern Germany) c1250.  A "Margrave", originally the head of a frontier (and therefore important) state, is equivalent to a Marquis in the Anglo-noble pecking order and a Marchese in Italy.  In pre city-state times there was a Margrave of Tuscany based in Lucca then later Florence.
