There is a c1976 coffee table book by Lawrence Lee et al called "Stained Glass" which is a real tour de force of the history and mechanics of stained glass.  As well as great colour photos by Sonia Halliday and Laura Lushingham, it contains keys to all the windows in Chartres, York and a couple of other places.  It's out of print, but can still be found second hand sometimes.

Ten of the best coffee table sized books in the Dom Paradox library .....

Architecture of the Middle AAges, Urrike Laule Cloisters of Europe, Daniel Faure & Veronique Roucnon

Ulrike Laule et al's Architecture of the Middle Ages mainly concentrates brilliantly on abbeys and churches, but includes some secular architecture.  Though not as comprehensive as the two Schütz books below, it's our favourite of the four books here.

At last search, this beautiful book was only available second hand, but it is well worth the effort to find.

Great Cathedrals, Bernhard Schutz Great Monasteries of Europe, Schutz

"Great Cathedrals"  by Schütz has seriously good photographic coverage of the main cathedrals of England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy (ex Puglia, which you have to come to this site for), and a lot of it.

Schütz's equally fat and well photographed "Great Monasteries of Europe" does for monasteries what his book on the left did for cathedrals.
