BOOKS ABOUT THE CRUSADES
The Crusades to the Holy Land lasted from 1095 to 1291, when the last Christian enclaves were reconquered and closed down. The use of the word "Crusade" as a formal descriptor of policy by Kings and Popes continued for at least another three hundred years, and Hindley's book, for example, looks more widely at church inspired "wars for the Faith".

There is also a DVD of this, Terry Jones' entertaining and informative story of the crusades. Jones earlier rose to fame via Monty Python.
Books about the the Knights Templar and Hospitaller
The Knights Templar were formed in 1118 and finally (forcibly) dissolved 200 years later in 1312
The other authoritative templar history, but this time in narrative form.
This 2007 book is described correctly as scholarly, authoritative and readable. It's A-Z encyclopaedia format means that one can join in on any page as time and interest dictate, rather than having to follow through a book length narrative.
