Sadly (we think) the "march of progress" has led to the opening of a large new restaurant area next to the terrace (below right) on the other side of the building, and it is no longer possible to sit out in the little piazza opposite the torre (below) or in the old bar on the left.

La Bottega di Carla Barucci (LINK) has for several years been one of the outstanding places to enjoy the best "cucina contadina" around - particularly sitting outside for lunch on a nice day. There are also tours around this "hamlet winery" north of Radda - Phone 0577 738066. Most of the winery has been built into / under the original little houses in the castello hamlet. The Volpaia label wines and olive oil are both very good, and Volpaia is one of only two or three places to have a licence to produce vinegar as well.

One of the spectacular winter afternoon views from the ridge road from Volpaia to Panzano |
And on the other side of the ridge - Vignamaggio, where (they say) the model for the Mona Lisa was born |
