This “Spanish Nativity Scene” is part of the painted plaster ceiling of the Guild House of the Spanish Merchants' Company in Barnstaple, North Devon.  It was originally completed on 9 July 1620.

Sunday 11 November 2012

 

is the anniversary of the Armistice which ended WW I in 1918.  This photo of Peggy, Clare and Jimmy Sproule was taken at Bigbury-on-Sea, S Devon, in late August 1918.  Jimmy was on a brief leave from the command of 131 Field Ambulance which served the front line fighting troops of the Welsh Division in one of the bloodiest battle areas near Amiens.  At this time it seemed the fighting could go on for much much longer than two more months.

Interesting that Clare resembles closely the beautiful Margravine Uta, statued in Naumburg Cathedral (Eastern Germany) c1250.
