Scorpio - Le Scorpion -The Scorpion

October 24 – November 22

The medieval monks of Canterbury Cathedral thought scorpions looked like kangaroos - more remarkable because it was a few centuries before any European laid eyes on a roo !

Further south at Saint Augustine in the Romney Marshes,

their scorpion was modelled on a frog

 - at least they had seen plenty of those

Meantime, in the less exotic world of 131 Field Ambulance and the 38th (Welsh) Division supporting front line fighters at Berlaimont in the East of France, the other Grandpa Paradox, Lt Col Jimmy Sproule RAMC, notes on 11 November "Armistice with Germany signed and hostilities cease", and straightaway swings into action for peace celebrations by releasing bandsmen from stretcher bearing duties and returning them to their bands.

November 11 is Armistice Day - this photo of the November 1918  Armistice parade in Baghdad at the end of WW I was taken by RAMC Captain Jimmy Fletcher  - aka Grandpa Paradox - Adjutant of the River Sick Boats.

Sunday 11 November 2012

is the anniversary of the Armistice which ended WW I in 1918.  This photo of Peggy, Clare and Jimmy Sproule was taken at Bigbury-on-Sea, S Devon, in late August 1918.  Jimmy was on a brief leave from the command of 131 Field Ambulance which served the front line fighting troops of the Welsh Division in one of the bloodiest battle areas near Amiens.  At this time it seemed the fighting could go on for much much longer than two more months.

More about WW I

Interesting that Clare resembles closely the beautiful Margravine Uta, statued in Naumburg Cathedral (Eastern Germany) c1250.
