Abbadia Isola - pilgrim hospice (1050), xenodochio (pilgrim refuge area) (1102), abbey church (1173 and recently beautifully restored) and monastery buildings (1000s - 1100s and not presently visitable) on the via Francigena to the NW of Siena near Monteriggioni. There is also also another hall and chapel used by the Compagnia del Corpus Domini and a pleasant restaurant.
Above - late afternoon; right - early morning.
The explanatory signage at the site is most impressive and is included here as descriptive panels. |
