The narrow road fringing the east of the park is a very beautiful drive and the source of most of our photos. Start at Barrea and go up the winding road to the dark mountain hill town of Scanno. The northern end of this road runs along the wild Gole del Sagittario (gorges) to the dramatically positioned old Norman garrison town of Anversa degli Abruzzi (below). The road back down through the centre of the park is not so dramatic. It ends up in Pescasseroli, which is the administrative and tourist centre for the park, but not in the same league as the delightful town of Pescocostanza which was our base.
