The Cannaregio Churches of Madonna dell'Orto and Gesuiti

Gothic simplicity v Baroque well over the top

LINK to Maps of Venice

The church of the Madonna dell'Orto is a descendant of an Umiliati church in the mid 1300s.  It is a beautiful example of Venetian early gothic architecture, restored with the help of English money.  This was the parish church of Tintoretto, who is buried here.  Tragically the 1478 Bellini Madonna on the left was stolen by some ferral in 1993 and has yet to be recovered.

The Jesuit Church of the Assumption dates from around 1730.  It replaced an earlier church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Crossbearers dating from 1150.   Atmospheric baroque!!
