The Chapter House used to contain the tombs of the abbesses, before it was remodelled with another stunning wood board floor in around 1600. To the left of the back left pillar above is a portrait of Abbess Doņa Antonia Jacinta de Navarra, whilst the tomb of 1552 Abbess Doņa Isabel de Mendooza y Navarra is in a corner of rhe Great Cloister (below). The old polished floorboards here and in the abbey church are some of the most magnificent you will ever see.
The great cloister itself (bottom of page), after all sorts of odd fill-ins and alterations, is no longer the elegant place it probably was in the old days, but luckily there are Las Claustrillos. Several web sites who pick up their information from other websites without checking, use a quote from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica describing the cloisters as "unrivalled for beauty both of detail and design, and perhaps unsurpassed by anything in its age and style in any part of Europe" - which they are not, and never were within a bulls' roar of.
