If you tried (May 2006) getting to the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos from the east, there was a 60+ Km detour, which luckily led us into some beautiful little towns and country in the valley of the Rio Arlanza. The Arlanza river marked the Christian / Muslim borders in the early days before the Reconquista picked up momentum - there are several Romanesque churches and monasteries along its route. |
