The Sinagoga del Tránsito is the main featured attraction of Jewish Toledo, which means that it is often uncomfortably crowded. The synagogue was founded in 1357 by Samuel ha-Leví Abufalia, treasurer and advisor to King Pedro I of Castile. There is a Jewish museum there, but the only room with a unique feel about it is the huge prayer room. The photos show the end wall and the painted coffered ceiling of the preyer room.
Tip ...... there were two King Pedro Is who lived at the same time .... King Pedro I of Castile (1334 - 1350 - 1369 (35) aka Pedro the Cruel and Pedro the Lawful, and King Pedro I of Portugal (1329 - 1357 - 1367 (38) aka Pedro the Just - all very confusing. The Castilian one left the world the gob smacking palace bearing his name in the Real Alcazar in Seville, the Portugese one left the world the legend of his love affair with Inčs de Castro and their tombs facing each other across the transept of the Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça. |
