The Dean's Eye rose window at the north end of the Great Transept has emerged triumphant from a 20 year restoration. The principal theme of the narratives is the Last Judgement, though sadly this does not lead to the French tympanum symbolism of hell's jaws and queues of chained sinners awaiting their fate .... ooh well, it's still a magnificent window! |

Visceral Tomb of Queen Eleanor of Castile (Victorian reconstruction). The original gilded effigy was a twin sister of the one in Westminster Abbey. Queen Eleanor died near Lincoln, and the route that her funeral cortege took to get to London was later marked with the famous Eleanor Crosses. |

THE LINCOLN PILGRIM AND FRIENDS
The Lincoln Pilgrim is a famous image - he is one of three people in the spandrels of the east windows of the south west chapel which also houses the bookshop. Because of their position they go largely unnoticed. The top man is Satan with what looks like a chisel in his hand (and a water spout in his loins??) but it might have started out as something longer. On the right is a less well equipped traveller (with a liquid lunch?). In most images of medieval pilgrims there is a pilgrim's badge like the Santiago scallop shell to be seen on a bag or purse but we have not found one here yet.
